Review
Halifax quintet Godthrymm beef up their lineup on Projections with the addition of second guitarist Kris McLaughlin, completing their ambitious "Visions Trilogy." The new configuration allows them to balance despondent, slow-marching classic doom with moments of heavier, fast-paced gallops.
Critics welcome this expansive approach. Writing for Decibel, reviewers appreciate how the band "takes melodic doom metal and throws in powerful punches of thrash and death that keep things engaging," particularly on the thrash-leaning opener "Trenches Deep". Much praise is also directed at the vocal chemistry between Hamish and Catherine Glencross, with Hamish's raspy grit contrasting neatly with his wife's lush clean harmonies.
However, the album's structural shifts draw occasional critique. PopMatters argues that the record "ultimately struggles to sustain the consistency, resulting in a record whose peaks rival its predecessors, but whose structure ultimately falters." Even so, the final installment remains a heavy, deeply sorrowful culmination of the band's conceptual arc.
