Review
Rather than retreating into the unvarnished street-punk bluntness of their debut, Haywire hone their bruising velocity into sweeping, hook-forward territory. The Boston outfit leaves behind the insular confines of their earliest brawlers, doubling down instead on massive gang vocal refrains, gleaming guitar contours, and a surprising undercurrent of road-worn melancholy.
The shift tightens the rhythm section while making ample room for broader melodic swings. After a brief brass-and-croon preamble cracks open "THAT'S LIFE", the record lunges into punchy downstrokes, quickly followed by the blunt stomp of "FLEX YOUR HEAD", which delivers eighty seconds of concentrated physical impact. Yet the record's real core lies in its expansive, mid-tempo material. The title track layers surging power chords and crisp handclaps against Austin Sparkman's anxious refrains, while the bittersweet chord progressions and confessional vocal strain of "SINCERELY YOURS" ground the group's frantic momentum in hard-won maturity.
