Review
Reeking Aura’s sophomore effort On the Promise of the Moon rejects the simplistic brute force typical of the modern old-school death metal revival. Fronted by vocalist Will Smith, the New York and New Jersey supergroup pairs their guttural East Coast heft with unexpected Swedish melodeath sensibilities and progressive textures.
Critics agree that this record excels by recognizing that raw aggression has its limits. Decibel Magazine lauded the quintet's ability to turn what could have been formulaic passages into dynamic hooks with "their own dynamics and emotional builds." Far from softening their sound, these melodic additions highlight a "knack for songwriting that remains heavier than hell without exhausting the listener," as praised by No Clean Singing.
Rather than muddying the tracklist, the progressive flourishes allow "luscious melodeath harmonies" to "briefly cut through the grime like cold light breaking into a sealed room," according to The Progressive Subway. At a lean 32 minutes, the result is an advanced masterclass in balancing guttural rot with genuine hook-writing.
