During “Miffed It”, Dylan Young lets a snaking electric guitar lick spool across warm chord organ swells and muted drum taps, untangling romantic missteps without ever raising his voice. The restraint is deliberate. Rather than pushing for grand confessionals, the Melbourne multi-instrumentalist cultivates intimacy through soft-focus domesticity, resting on unhurried strums, reedy woodwinds, and stacked falsetto harmonies.
Across the surrounding tracks, that quiet touch pivots into distinct stylistic pockets. “Ibiza” ditches acoustic softness for clipped cowbells, rubbery bass, and prickly art-funk jitter, while “Mercy Town” rides a bright piano shuffle toward an encroaching downpour. By the final stretch, the pacing downshifts abruptly into the stark, nocturnal drift of “Evening Star”. Orchestrated details—ascending violin phrases, harmonium drone, and reedy soprano saxophone—enrich these miniature vignettes without cluttering their easygoing momentum.
